NYCN Okigwe Zone Vice Chairman Commends Governor Uzodimma On Historic Minimum Wage Reform

The Vice Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Okigwe Zone, Comrade Kelechi Iwuchukwu, has lauded the Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, for approving a new salary structure for civil servants, describing the development as a “landmark milestone that will transform the socio-economic landscape of Imo State.”
Governor Uzodimma recently announced an upward review of the minimum wage for civil servants to ₦104,000, alongside significant adjustments for professionals in key sectors such as healthcare and education. Entry-level doctors will now earn ₦582,000, while lecturers’ entry-level salaries have been pegged at ₦222,000.
Speaking on the reforms, Comrade Iwuchukwu noted that the Governor’s gesture reflects “genuine leadership anchored on empathy and fairness,” stressing that the new wage will lift many families out of poverty, improve living conditions, and motivate workers to be more productive.
He further highlighted the strategic importance of the healthcare and education increments, observing that better pay for doctors and lecturers will not only curb brain drain but also enhance service delivery. “When professionals are well compensated, they stay committed to their duties, and the people reap the benefits through better hospitals, better schools, and stronger institutions,” he said.
Comrade Iwuchukwu also commended the Governor for remembering senior citizens and pensioners through the commencement of new gratuity payments. He described this as “an honourable act of respect and gratitude to those who have served the state in years past.”
The youth leader stressed that beyond workers’ welfare, the ripple effects of the reforms will positively impact the broader economy. Increased purchasing power, he said, will stimulate local trade, empower small businesses, and create new opportunities for grassroots development.
On behalf of the youths of Okigwe Zone and the NYCN family, Comrade Iwuchukwu expressed deep appreciation to Governor Uzodimma, assuring him of continued youth support for policies that advance the welfare of the people.
“This wage reform is not just a salary increment, it is a statement of dignity for workers and a beacon of hope for families. It has shown once again that Governor Uzodimma is committed to building an Imo State where service is valued and the people’s well-being is prioritized,” he concluded.
