FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup: Ambassador Ohakim Lifts Falconets’ Spirits Ahead Of China Clash
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Her Excellency Mrs. Chioma Priscillia Ohakim, mni, has moved to lift the spirits of the Falconets following their 0-2 defeat to Spain in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Rather than allow the disappointing result to dampen the team’s morale, Ambassador Ohakim remained firmly behind the players, watching the encounter at the Stadion Sosnowiec alongside members of the Nigerian Mission and offering her support throughout.
Immediately after the final whistle, the Ambassador took time to meet with the players and members of the technical crew, encouraging them to put the defeat behind them and focus fully on their next match against China.
Ohakim reminded the young Nigerians that, despite the result, they had produced encouraging moments on the pitch and should retain confidence in their ability to compete at the highest level.
In an especially thoughtful gesture, the Ambassador also brought Nigerian food for the players, giving them a welcome taste of home and helping to lift the mood within the camp.
Her presence, personal interaction and words of encouragement provided a timely boost to the Falconets as they prepare for Thursday evening’s crucial Group F encounter with China at the Stadion Sosnowiec.
The two-time silver-medallists face a highly motivated Chinese side that opened its campaign in emphatic fashion, thrashing New Caledonia 5-0. The result put China at the top of Group F, ahead of 2022 champions Spain on goal difference.
Thursday’s encounter will be the third meeting between Nigeria and China at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals.
Their first meeting came in 2006 in Russia, in the tournament that was renamed the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after the first two editions were staged as the FIFA U19 Women’s World Championship. China defeated the Falconets 3-0 in a group-stage encounter at the Podmoskovie Stadium.
The teams met again in 2018 in France, where a late own goal by a Chinese defender earned Nigeria a 1-1 draw in Dinan-Léhon. That result helped send the Falconets through to the quarter-finals.
With the stakes considerably higher this time, head coach Moses Aduku says the team has already drawn a line under the defeat to Spain and is fully focused on China.
“We have put the match against Spain behind us and are focusing totally on the clash with China,” Aduku said on Wednesday night. “The players are ready to come out stronger for the match against China.”
And with Ambassador Ohakim’s show of support providing an additional source of encouragement, the Falconets will hope to turn that renewed confidence into a positive result when they return to the Stadion Sosnowiec on Thursday.
