Imo’s Future After Uzodimma: Competence Must Come First — Addressing OZAC’s Alarmist Claims

By Marx Otugo (Egbeyiugo)

The reason we are insisting on a merit-based successor, rather than a quota system, a.k.a Charter of Equity approach.

Leadership should be earned, not allocated. It is interesting to see that some voices from Owerri Zone are only now beginning to understand what we have been saying from the very beginning.

Their recent tone and subtle shift in argument show an emerging alignment with our long-held position that competence, credibility, and proven capacity must determine who leads, not geopolitical entitlement.

If the goal is genuine progress, development, and stability, then merit must take precedence over sentimental zoning arrangements.

A quota system may satisfy temporary political emotions, but it does not guarantee the quality of leadership needed to address the deep structural challenges facing our state.

A merit-based process ensures that the most capable, visionary, and competent individuals emerge—regardless of zone because leadership affects all , not just those from a particular zone

In the end, good governance is not delivered by where a leader comes from, but by what that leader can deliver.

And it is refreshing to see Owerri Zone gradually recognizing this truth and lending subtle support to the merit-first argument most of us have championed from day one.
