Dr. Ikedi Ohakim – The Bridge Builder Imo Needs Again

Leadership Beyond Politics – A Legacy of Unity, Progress, and People-First Governance

By Capt Bishop C. Johnson

When Imo was divided by politics, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim brought us together. As governor, he stood above party lines, uniting political heavyweights and ordinary citizens alike around a single cause — the progress of Ndi Imo. He gave our youths jobs, turned ISOPADEC into a law to fight the decades of neglect in our oil-producing communities, and defended our environment with action, not promises. Ohakim’s leadership was never about politics; it was about people. He did it once, and with our support, he will do it again — because Imo’s future is bigger than any one party, and together, we can make it brighter.

Some have tried to spin an image where Dr Ohakim brought Imo leaders together to solve common Imo problems negatively, but the truth it represents cannot be erased. In that frame stood an extraordinary blend of political heavyweights: Senator Hope Uzodinma, then representing Imo West and our current governor; former Governor Emeka Ihedioha; Senator Athan Achonu; Senator Samuel Anyanwu, now the National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP); and Rt. Hon. Goodluck Opiah, then Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly. Different parties, different constituencies, different personal ambitions — yet under Ohakim’s leadership, they worked together.

This was not an accident. It was leadership by design. Ohakim’s style of governance was anchored on a principle he has never abandoned: placing the people’s interest above partisan politics and personal ambition. He understood that the problems confronting Ndi Imo — unemployment, infrastructure decay, insecurity, environmental degradation — could not be solved within the narrow confines of party lines.

His philosophy was simple yet profound: “Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone.” That cause was, and remains, the wellbeing of Imo State.

During his tenure, this spirit of inclusion translated into results. The New Face of Imo Agenda was not just a slogan; it was a governance blueprint that drew on the strengths of all stakeholders, regardless of political colouration. The outcome was visible in job creation initiatives like the 10,000 Graduate Employment Scheme, the establishment of IROMA for rural road development, the revitalization of environmental management through ENTRACO, and the codification of the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC) into law to fight environmental and ecological challenges and address decades of developmental neglect in Imo’s oil producing communities.

Today, as Imo continues in its quest to deal with its pressing socio-economic and political challenges, the lesson from that photograph is more urgent than ever. We need a leader who can bridge divides, inspire cooperation, and rally everyone — from all parties and persuasions — to work for the greater good. We need a leader with the maturity, tact, and track record to put Imo first.

Dr. Ikedi Ohakim did it before. He can do it again.

In an era when political rancor too often paralyzes progress, Imo needs a governor who understands that the true measure of leadership is not in vanquishing opponents, but in uniting them for a higher purpose. That photograph is not just a relic of the past — it is a reminder of the kind of leadership that once worked for Imo, and the kind that can work again.
