Okigwe Apex Youth Body Mourns A Distinguished Youth Leader — Comrade Mitchell Ekwegh (Pope)

Okigwe Zone and Mbano stand in solemn reflection following the passing of Comrade Mitchell Ekwegh (Pope), a commanding presence, a fearless advocate, and a lifelong servant of the youth movement in Imo State. His departure marks the end of an era defined by courage, conviction, and unwavering dedication to the cause of young people.

A former Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Imo State Chapter, Comrade Ekwegh was a renowned Youth Council elder statesman and one of the pioneering architects of organized youth leadership in the state. Long before youth inclusion became a popular political expression, he was already laying structures, mobilizing young leaders, and strengthening institutional frameworks that gave youths a seat at the table.

He served with distinction at both state and national levels, carrying the banner of Imo youths with pride and boldness. In meetings and public engagements, his voice rose with clarity and force, firm, articulate, and unapologetic in defense of youth interests. He believed deeply that the progress of Imo State depended on the empowerment, education, and active participation of its young population.

Comrade Ekwegh was not merely an administrator of office; he was a builder of people. He championed human capital development in practical and sustainable ways, promoting leadership training, civic responsibility, entrepreneurship, education, and mentorship. Many youth leaders across Okigwe Zone and Imo State today can trace their political and civic consciousness to his guidance and encouragement.

He stood as one of the strongest pillars of the youth voice in Okigwe Zone and Imo at large. His presence symbolized strength; his counsel offered direction; his courage inspired confidence. He was powerful in influence, yet accessible in character — an elder who never distanced himself from the grassroots. He listened as much as he spoke, and when he spoke, his words carried weight.

At a time when the youth structure required stability and vision, he provided both. He understood that leadership was not about personal prominence, but about building enduring institutions. The structures he helped establish within the Youth Council remain foundational to its operations today.

His passing leaves a noticeable vacuum within the youth leadership architecture of Okigwe Zone and across Imo State. Yet, while his voice may be silent, his impact continues to resonate. The principles he stood for, unity, inclusion, empowerment, and fearless advocacy remain guiding lights for the present generation of youth leaders.

Okigwe has indeed lost a pillar. Mbano has lost a worthy son. The youth movement in Imo has lost one of its most steadfast guardians. But history will remember Comrade Mitchell Ekwegh (Pope) as a man who devoted his life to the service of young people and worked tirelessly to secure their rightful place in leadership and development.

His legacy endures in the lives he shaped, the leaders he mentored, and the structures he strengthened.
