Owerri Zone Not Ready For 2027 — Wait Till 2031: If We Must Follow Equity, The Path Leads Through Dr. Ikedi Ohakim

By HK MADU
As the political climate in Imo State gradually heats up ahead of the 2027 governorship election, it is becoming increasingly evident that Owerri Zone must approach the coming years with strategic patience and political wisdom. Emotions aside, equity, fairness and justice demand that the zone waits till 2031 to mount a credible and unifying bid for the governorship.
The argument is simple and deeply rooted in political balance. Okigwe had a brief and interrupted tenure under Dr. Ikedi Ohakim between 2007 and 2011. Equity dictates that Okigwe should be allowed to complete its remaining term before power naturally shifts to Owerri Zone. Any other arrangement would disrupt the moral and political equilibrium that has sustained relative peace among the zones.
The wiser path for Owerri is to consolidate politically, build stronger alliances across the three zones, especially with Okigwe and prepare adequately for 2031 when the moral and political tide will clearly favor Owerri.
At the center of this conversation stands Dr. Ikedi Ohakim – a man of experience, integrity and balance. Having governed Imo with vision and prudence, Ohakim remains the bridge between past and future, between Okigwe and Owerri and between political pragmatism and equitable justice. His leadership offers a pathway to political reconciliation and an orderly transfer of power that will restore fairness and stability to Imo politics.
If we must truly follow equity, then Owerri Zone must align with Ohakim and support Okigwe’s completion of its tenure. That alignment will not only uphold fairness but also place Owerri Zone on a stronger moral and political footing to claim its turn in 2031 not in agitation but in unity and legitimacy.
