WORLD CONSUMER PROTECTION DAY: IMO CPC CREATES AWARENESS

The Imo Consumer Protection Council (ICPC) is gearing up for a significant event as it prepares to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on March 18, 2025. This year’s celebration is particularly suited to current global issues with the theme “A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyles.” This theme emphasizes the need for consumers to adopt sustainable practices that align with environmental conservation and social justice. As part of its preparatory activities, the ICPC organized a road walk to raise awareness about the event and engage the people in discussions about consumer rights and sustainable choices.

The road walk, which took place in the heart of Owerri, the Imo State capital, attracted a diverse group of participants, including students, business men, and residents. The event aimed to not only promote the upcoming celebration but also to inspire Imolites to think critically about their consumer habits. Walking proudly through the streets, participants carried banners bearing messages related to sustainable living, responsible consumption, and the rights of consumers, creating a festive atmosphere that was both engaging and educative.

Honourable Dr. Chimezie Amadi, the Commissioner for Digital Economy, will serve as the guest speaker at the upcoming celebration. His presence underscores the importance of integrating digital advancements into the conversation around consumer rights and sustainability. The digital landscape presents both opportunities and challenges for consumers, and Dr. Amadi’s insights are expected to shed light on how technology can facilitate more sustainable consumer behaviors. As digital platforms become increasingly integral to shopping and consumer interactions, the role of digital literacy in empowering consumers cannot be overstated.

In the lead-up to March 18, the ICPC is committed to fostering dialogue about the implications of consumer choices on the environment and society as a whole. The emphasis is on ensuring that consumers are aware of their rights as they transition to more sustainable lifestyles. The ICPC is also collaborating with various stakeholders, including environmental agencies and NGOs, to amplify the message of sustainability and consumer empowerment.

As World Consumer Rights Day approaches, the collective efforts of the ICPC and the enthusiastic participation of Imolites highlight a shared commitment to forging a sustainable future. Through initiatives like the road walk and the upcoming celebrations, the ICPC is not merely advocating for consumer rights but also promoting a deeper understanding of how ethical consumption can lead to a healthier planet. The road may be long, but with dedicated efforts, the journey toward sustainable lifestyles will undeniably be transformative for consumers in Imo State and beyond.
