The First Lady of Imo State, Her Excellency ( Dr) Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma, has called for increased awareness and early detection of ovarian cancer as the world commemorates World Ovarian Cancer Day 2026.
Mrs. Uzodimma, who is the founder GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative, said ovarian cancer remains a silent but deadly disease because its symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for less serious health conditions, leading to late diagnosis in many cases.
According to her, this year’s global theme, “No Woman Left Behind,” highlights the urgent need to ensure that women everywhere have access to health information, regular screenings, and quality medical care.
“Ovarian cancer often presents no obvious symptoms in its early stages, which is why awareness and regular health screenings are absolutely vital,” she said.
She urged women to pay close attention to warning signs such as persistent bloating, pelvic pain, feeling full quickly, and frequent urination, noting that early detection significantly increases survival chances.
“Early detection saves lives. I encourage every woman to prioritise her health, schedule regular medical check-ups, and never ignore persistent symptoms,” Dr. Uzodimma stated.
The Imo First Lady further stressed the need to break the silence surrounding ovarian cancer through sustained advocacy and public education.
“Knowledge is power, and awareness is our first line of defence. Together, we can protect women’s health and save lives,” she added.
Dr. Uzodimma reaffirmed the commitment of the GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative to promoting women’s health and supporting campaigns aimed at reducing the burden of cancer among wome
