Macron, Tinubu Hold Talks As France Pledges Stronger Support On Nigeria’s Security Challenges

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke on Friday with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss the worsening security situation in parts of northern Nigeria, reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Africa’s most populous nation in its fight against terrorism and instability.
According to the French presidency, Macron expressed France’s “solidarity in the face of the various security challenges,” noting in particular the continued threat posed by terrorist groups operating across the region. The two leaders reviewed current efforts to stabilize affected areas and protect vulnerable populations.
During the conversation, President Tinubu requested enhanced cooperation, prompting Macron to pledge that France would strengthen its partnership with Nigerian authorities. Officials say this could include expanded security assistance, deeper intelligence collaboration, and increased humanitarian support for communities impacted by violence.
Macron also urged the international community to intensify its engagement. “No one can remain a spectator,” the French President said, calling for coordinated regional and global efforts to help curb extremist activity and address the humanitarian fallout.
Nigeria has faced persistent attacks from insurgent factions and armed groups in recent months, leaving communities displaced and overstretching local security forces. Both leaders emphasized the importance of international solidarity as they seek to restore stability.
The French government stated it remains committed to working with Nigeria and other partners in West Africa to promote long-term peace and development.
