IKEDI OHAKIM: The Best Bet for 2027 – A Call to Orlu and Owerri for a ‘JUST RETURN’ to the Charter of Equity

By: Comr. Kelechi IWUCHUKWU
As the 2027 governorship election in Imo State draws closer, the question on the minds of every patriotic Imolite is simple yet profound: How do we uphold justice, fairness, and equity in our dear state?
For decades, Imo State has prided itself on the Charter of Equity, an unwritten yet morally binding agreement among the three senatorial zones – Orlu, Owerri, and Okigwe – to rotate power for balanced development, unity, and peace. But today, that charter stands at a crossroads, and the onus is on us all – especially the good people of Orlu and Owerri zones – to right the ship.
In 2027, the moral weight of justice and equity rests on one decision: Returning the governorship to Okigwe zone to complete their rightful turn. And in doing so, no candidate embodies competence, stability, experience, and broad-based appeal more than Dr. Ikedi Ohakim.
Why Ikedi Ohakim? Why Now?
1. A Mandate Interrupted Deserves Completion
Dr. Ikedi Ohakim served as Governor of Imo State from 2007 to 2011, a single term that was prematurely cut short despite his significant strides in governance. While other zones have enjoyed full 8-year tenures or more, Okigwe has remained the shortchanged partner. Supporting Ohakim in 2027 is not about politics – it’s about fairness. It’s about letting Okigwe finish what they began, just like Orlu and Owerri have.
2. Proven Leadership in Troubled Times
Ohakim’s tenure remains one of the most impactful in Imo’s recent history. He introduced bold infrastructural projects, stabilized state finances, and laid the foundation for environmental reforms. In a time when governance is often reduced to propaganda, Ohakim stands out as a leader who delivered. He understands governance and its complexities, and he carries no baggage of incompetence or crisis-mongering.
3. A Bridge Between the Zones
Unlike many politicians tied strictly to sectional interests, Ohakim is a pan-Imo leader. His political structure and goodwill cut across Orlu, Owerri, and Okigwe, making him a unifying force rather than a divisive figure. In 2027, what Imo needs is not another power tussle, but a consensus builder – someone who can finish the Okigwe mandate and hand over peacefully to another zone in the spirit of equity. That man is Ikedi Ohakim.
A Direct Appeal to Orlu and Owerri: Let’s Make History, Not Repeat Mistakes
To our brothers and sisters in Orlu, you have proudly held the governorship for over 20 years cumulatively. You have produced governors who served and shaped the state’s destiny. In fairness, it is not Orlu’s turn in 2027. It is time to demonstrate leadership in sacrifice – by backing Okigwe and honoring the same equity that once brought Orlu to power.
To our great people of Owerri zone, you too understand what it means to wait patiently for a fair turn. In 2023, the collective cry was for justice, and Owerri’s case was well understood. But in the arithmetic of justice, one injustice cannot correct another. By supporting Okigwe now – through Ohakim – Owerri sets the tone for a smoother transition in the future, building a moral high ground from which your own turn will be irrefutable.
Beyond Politics: Restoring Imo’s Moral Compass
The 2027 election must be about more than ambition. It must be about restoring the soul of our politics – anchored on fairness, zoning, competence, and peace. If we ignore the Charter of Equity again, we risk an Imo State perpetually trapped in political conflict and distrust.
“Dr. Ikedi Ohakim is not just another candidate. He is the symbol of unfinished justice. He is Okigwe’s loudest yet most reasoned voice for equity. He is the bridge to peace, the man who can hand over with grace, and the leader who carries both experience and maturity.”
In Summary: Let Us Do the Right Thing
As Orlu and Owerri zones look to 2027, let us not be driven by the politics of self-interest. Let us instead be guided by the noble principles that have kept Imo united for decades. Supporting Ikedi Ohakim is not just supporting a man – it is supporting justice, rewarding competence, and most importantly, restoring balance in our beloved state.
Let us stand together, all three zones, and make 2027 a turning point. Let us return to the Charter of Equity – and let Ikedi Ohakim finish the turn that Okigwe rightfully began.
