IMOCARE HEALTH INSURANCE COMMENCES STATEWIDE REGISTRATION

In a bold move to provide affordable and inclusive healthcare for all residents, the Imo State Government has commenced statewide registration for its ImoCare Health Insurance Programme. The initiative, spearheaded by the Imo State Health Insurance Agency under the leadership of Executive Secretary and CEO Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, aims to enroll 2.7 million people across the state’s 27 Local Government Areas.

Addressing stakeholders in a recent briefing, Dr. Ewelike described ImoCare as a transformative public health intervention designed to ensure that every Imolite—regardless of economic status—can access essential healthcare services.

“It is the duty of the government to protect the weak, and that is what we are doing in Imo State,” he stated.
ImoCare requires a modest annual contribution of N15,000 per person. However, Dr. Ewelike noted that vulnerable individuals identified during the enrollment process are registered at no cost. “Our trained staff are committed to ensuring no one is left behind. We are a smart agency targeting those most in need,” he said.

The programme’s funding for vulnerable groups is supported by a coalition of donors, including Governor Hope Uzodimma, local government authorities, legislators at state and federal levels, political appointees, philanthropists, and other government supporters.
ImoCare covers a wide range of basic health services but does not include cancer treatment. Emphasizing its non-partisan nature, Dr. Ewelike remarked, “Health needs don’t know parties, tribes, or religion.”
The agency aims to enroll 100,000 residents in each LGA, totaling 2.7 million across Imo State. Dr. Ewelike expressed optimism about hitting this target, citing strong political backing and encouraging public support.
“By the grace of God and with the support of Imolites, we will reach this historic milestone,” he affirmed.
The ImoCare Health Insurance Programme marks a significant step toward achieving universal health coverage in the state, offering hope for improved health outcomes and economic productivity for all residents.
