Ikedi Ohakim 2027: A New Dawn For Imo State.

By Bathram Uwandu.

As the 2027 Imo State governorship election draws closer, political permutations are shifting in favor of former Governor Ikedi Ohakim, whose name is resonating once again as a beacon of hope for the Eastern Heartland. With a legacy of bold reforms, infrastructural vision, and a commitment to equitable governance, Ohakim’s potential return to Douglas House is being hailed as a chance to restore unfinished dreams and usher in a new era of progress for Imo State .

Gov. Ohakim, who governed Imo from 2007 to 2011, left an indelible mark with his ambitious  Clean and Green Initiative which transformed Owerri into Nigeria’s cleanest capital city. His administration also pioneered the Imo Free Way,  a 150-kilometer road network designed to connect 19 local governments, and the Oguta Wonder Lake Resort,  a tourism project that promised economic revitalization . Though some of these projects were left incomplete after his tenure, their conceptual brilliance remains a confirmation to his forward-thinking leadership.

Furthermore, the Imo Charter of Equity, designed to rotate power among the state’s three zones, favors Okigwe Zone in 2027. Ohakim, an Okigwe son, is seen as the zone’s most experienced contender, having governed before. We have  argued  that Okigwe has been marginalized, having only governed for four years (2007-2011) compared to Orlu’s 24 years and Owerri’s 29 months.

Ochinanwata, as he is popularly called by friends, as his political movement is gaining momentum, with endorsements from civil society groups, traditional rulers, and youth organizations. His recent community tours and engagements have reignited public faith in his leadership .

Moreso, Imolites believe that Ohakim’s unfinished projects such as the Imo Free Way and Oguta Wonder Lake could finally be realized if given a second term. His financial ingenuity, including the N18.5 billion bond for infrastructure, remains a model for state financing .

As 2027 approaches, Ikedi Ohakim stands at a historic crossroads. His potential return symbolizes more than just a political comeback it represents a second chance for Imo State to reclaim its developmental trajectory. With a mix of nostalgia, equity arguments, and grassroots support, Ohakim 2027 could indeed mark a new dawn for Imo.
