In a major victory for education and healthcare in Imo State, the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has secured accreditation for its medical school. This milestone comes with a significant increase in student quota, doubling from 50 to 100 medical students annually.

This achievement was made possible through the unwavering support of His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma. “With maximum support from His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, and to the glory of God, I have today secured accreditation for the FUTO Medical school and with a 100% increase in quota from 50 to 100 medical students,” announced Professor Bond Anyaehie the pioneer Provost of the FUTO Medical School.
Governor Uzodimma’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure in the state has played a crucial role in the successful accreditation of the FUTO Medical School. The Governor facilitated the upgrade of the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Owerri to a teaching hospital, creating a vital training ground for future medical professionals. This upgrade will not only enhance the quality of healthcare delivery in the state but also provide invaluable hands-on experience for FUTO medical students.
Furthermore, Governor Uzodimma’s support has extended to the recruitment of qualified staff for the medical school. He has also actively attracted key personnel, including Professor Bond Anyaehie from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), to lead the FUTO Medical School.
“With this accreditation, FUTO College of Medicine will now be listed in the world directory of medical schools as the former FMC will now be legally be addressed as a teaching hospital”, said Professor Bond Anyaehie while receiving the team from medical and dental council of Nigeria at the teaching hospital.
