SDP Steps Up In Imo: Caretaker Chairman Rallies Members To Reposition Party As Credible Alternative

The Acting Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Imo State, Engr. Augustine Okere, has charged members of the party to intensify grassroots mobilization and present the SDP as a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Sir Don Ubah, Engr. Okere emphasized that the SDP is committed to championing the cause of the people rather than the selfish pursuit of personal enrichment.

“The Social Democratic Party, SDP, is desirous of bringing positive change to Nigerians in general, and to our dear Imo State in particular. We don’t believe in unnecessary accumulation of personal wealth while the populace suffers,” he declared.

The Caretaker Chairman further urged the newly inaugurated executive to work relentlessly within the 90-day mandate given by the party’s national leadership to reposition the SDP in Imo. He described the party as “the beautiful pride of Imo”, stressing the need for unity, strategy, and consistent engagement with the people.

As part of its restructuring efforts, the Imo State chapter of the SDP held its inaugural meeting in Owerri last week, where members resolved to build stronger internal cohesion and expand the party’s visibility across local government areas.

However, the renewed momentum within the SDP comes amid controversy. Disputes have emerged over what party insiders describe as the “false inclusion” of Mr. Osunde in the party’s activities. The issue has reignited discussions about the deep undercurrents of rivalry in Imo politics, where identity, loyalty, and legitimacy often collide.

Observers note that while the SDP is celebrating its reorganization and fresh leadership, the challenges of navigating internal conflicts and winning public trust will be crucial tests of its ability to stand as a credible political force ahead of the next elections.
