The United Kingdom has appointed Peter Vowles as its new High Commissioner to Nigeria, with his tenure set to commence in September 2026.

The announcement was made on Monday by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), which confirmed that Vowles will succeed Richard Montgomery in the role.

Vowles currently serves as the British High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, a position he has held since 2023. His appointment to Nigeria follows a distinguished diplomatic and development career spanning more than two decades across Africa and Asia.

Prior to his posting in Zimbabwe, Vowles served as Transformation Director at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office from 2022 to 2023. He was also the UK Ambassador to Myanmar between 2021 and 2022.

Earlier, he held the position of Director for Asia, Caribbean and Overseas Territories at the former Department for International Development (DFID) from 2018 to 2021. Between 2016 and 2018, he served as DFID’s Country Director in Kenya before heading programme delivery operations from 2013 to 2016.

From 2010 to 2013, Vowles was Deputy Country Director in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He also undertook assignments in India and Afghanistan, where he managed development, governance and security programmes.

Before joining the UK government in 2006, Vowles worked as a health and development consultant with Mott MacDonald. His earlier international experience included development and public health roles in Bangladesh, where he worked with the World Bank and other development agencies.

He also participated in the UK National Health Service Management Training Scheme and worked with Raleigh International. In the 1990s, Vowles served in various development roles in Zimbabwe and spent a period teaching under the country’s Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture.

His appointment underscores the enduring diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria and is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations as he prepares to assume office later this year.
