Cancer Survivors Gala 2026: FLAC Chairperson Reaffirms Commitment To Strengthening Cancer Care In Nigeria

The Chairperson of First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC) and First Lady of Imo State, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, has reaffirmed her commitment to advancing cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, patient support, and survivorship care across Nigeria.
Speaking at the Cancer Survivors Gala 2026, held at the Government House, Owerri, to commemorate National Cancer Survivor Month, Dr. Uzodimma described the event as a celebration of life, courage, and resilience, while emphasizing the need for sustained investments in Nigeria’s cancer care system.
The Gala brought together cancer survivors, government officials, healthcare professionals, development partners, First Ladies from across the country, and other stakeholders to honour individuals who have overcome cancer and to advocate for stronger support systems for those affected by the disease.
According to the FLAC Chairperson, this year’s theme, “Celebrating Survivorship, Strengthening Systems,” reflects the collective responsibility to build a healthcare system that enables every Nigerian affected by cancer not only to survive but to thrive.
She noted that cancer survivorship extends beyond successful treatment, stressing the importance of addressing the emotional, social, financial, and spiritual wellbeing of survivors.
Mrs. Uzodimma expressed appreciation to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across Nigeria. She also commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for the Renewed Hope Initiative’s support towards the elimination of cervical cancer through advocacy and intervention programmes.
The First Lady further acknowledged the support of the Government of Imo State under the leadership of Governor Hope Uzodimma, CON, as well as the contributions of fellow First Ladies, members of First Ladies Against Cancer (FLAC), the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), healthcare professionals, development partners, sponsors, volunteers, caregivers, Friends of FLAC, and other stakeholders whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.
She paid special tribute to cancer survivors, describing them as symbols of courage and hope whose stories continue to inspire greater commitment to improving cancer care and expanding access to quality treatment across the country.
The Cancer Survivors Gala formed part of activities marking National Cancer Survivor Month and reinforced FLAC’s ongoing advocacy for cancer prevention, HPV vaccination, early diagnosis, improved treatment, and comprehensive survivorship care for all Nigerians.
