A Call to Action: Urgent Need for Aba-Owerri Expressway Reconstruction

By Noel Chiagorom
A disturbing trend of fatal accidents and crimes has plagued the Aba-Owerri Expressway, claiming over 50 lives since January 1st, 2025. This alarming situation necessitates immediate attention from the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s political leaders, South-East governors, senators, and members of the Federal House of Representatives.
The Aba-Owerri Expressway, spanning 66.8km(1 hr 26min), is a critical artery connecting Abia and Imo states. However, its narrow and potholed terrain has become a breeding ground for accidents, armed robbery, and kidnapping.
The Federal Road Safety Commission’s seeming inaction has only exacerbated the problem. The Federal Government should prioritize the reconstruction and widening of the Aba-Owerri Expressway to reduce accidents and crimes. Governors Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and his Abia state counterpart Alex Otti, must work together to facilitate the construction of this critical interstate highway.
The Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, and the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. (Sen) David Umahi CON, should collaborate to ensure the project’s timely completion.
The Aba-Owerri Expressway’s deplorable condition is a ticking time bomb, threatening the lives and livelihoods of countless Nigerians. It is imperative that our leaders take decisive action to address this crisis and ensure the safety and security of all commuters.
