APC Ngor-Okpala House of Assembly Primary Election: Why Obinna Egu Remains the Most Viable Option

By Chibuike Njoku

Ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Ngor-Okpala State Constituency scheduled for tomorrow, indications continue to show that Hon. Obinna Egu, PhD, remains the most viable and strategic option for the party as it prepares for the main election.

As the current member representing Ngor-Okpala State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon. Egu has built a strong political profile through experience, grassroots engagement, and consistent electoral victories. While some political stakeholders may have preferred a fresh candidate, considering that he is completing his second term in office, many party loyalists and political observers believe that the coming general election will be highly competitive and requires a tested and experienced hand.

Over the years, Obinna Egu has demonstrated remarkable political strength and the capacity to mobilize support across communities in Ngor-Okpala. His deep connection with the grassroots and understanding of the political dynamics of the constituency place him in a better position to confront opposition candidates from rival political parties.

Political analysts argue that APC cannot afford to gamble with an untested candidate at a time when the opposition is expected to mount serious challenges. In this regard, Hon. Egu’s track record as a consistent vote-winner for the party becomes a major advantage. His political experience, strategic relationships, and acceptability among party members and the electorate make him a dependable choice for APC going into the general election.

Beyond his electoral value, Hon. Egu is also regarded as one of the ranking lawmakers in the State Assembly and could play a significant role in the leadership configuration of the next Assembly. There are growing speculations that if the governorship position is not zoned to Owerri Zone, Ngor-Okpala may be considered for the Speakership position as a form of political balancing, especially after the area was reportedly edged out of the Senate and House of Representatives positions.

In such a political calculation, retaining an experienced legislator like Obinna Egu may prove beneficial not only to Ngor-Okpala but also to the broader interests of the APC in Imo State.

For this reason, APC faithful in Ngor-Okpala are urged to approach the primary election with strategic thinking and unity of purpose. Hon. Obinna Egu’s third-term bid should be viewed not through the lens of personal ambition, but from the standpoint of electability, political experience, and the overall interest of the party.

At a critical moment such as this, APC needs a candidate with proven capacity, political structure, and the ability to secure victory at the polls — qualities many believe Hon. Obinna Egu possesses in abundance.
