NATASHA AKPOTI: THE NIGERIAN WOMAN OF THE YEAR

By Cajetan Duke
According to William Shakespeare, the 17th Century English playwright, poet and actor “Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once.”
These profound words of Shakespeare resonate deeply in the context of Senator Natasha Akpoti’s remarkable display of courage and audacity today. As she returns to her hometown in Kogi State, Nigeria, despite the state government’s ban and security restrictions, she embodies the very essence of bravery and determination.
Akpoti’s homecoming rally has earned her the well-deserved title of Nigerian Woman of the Year. Her unwavering commitment to her constituents and her unshakeable courage in the face of adversity serve as a powerful reminder that power belongs to the people in a real democratic system.
As a woman in a male-dominated political environment, Akpoti has faced numerous challenges, including her current battle with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of sexual harassment. Her suspension from the Senate has not deterred her, and she continues to fight for justice and equality.
The Kogi State government’s attempt to silence Akpoti by banning her rally only fueled her determination. She arrived in her hometown in grand style, via helicopter, and was greeted by a thunderous reception from her supporters. Her bold declaration, “Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira person; this is my land,” echoes her unwavering commitment to her roots and her people.
Akpoti’s defiance is not just a personal statement; it’s a powerful reminder that power belongs to the people in a real democratic system. Her courage has inspired countless Nigerians, particularly women, to stand up for their rights and demand justice.
The overwhelming turnout of supporters at her rally is a testament to Akpoti’s popularity and influence. Her ability to mobilize her constituents and inspire a sense of community and solidarity is a hallmark of effective leadership.
In contrast, those who seek to silence and intimidate Akpoti are reminiscent of the cowards Shakespeare described. They may try to strike fear into the hearts of others, but ultimately, they are the ones who will suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
In conclusion, Senator Natasha Akpoti’s bravery and leadership have earned her a well-deserved place in the annals of Nigerian history and in the hearts of well meaning and patriotic Nigerians. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of women and men to stand up for their rights and fight for a more just and equitable society.
By this very singular display of exceptional courage and audacity, she has simply re-echoed the real definition of democracy as “government of the people, by the people and for the people”
Congratulations to the number one people’s senator!
