Lady B’s Birthday: Where Leadership Met Maximized Asset

By kelechi Nwachukwu
Last weekend, Sunday, August 24,2025, to be precise, the Amainyi town in Ihitte Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State was agog as the creme de la creme of personalities stormed the town. It was not for war – not at all. It was not for any less a personality either.
The avalanche of bankers, technocrats, the political class and Nigerians from all walks of life who thronged the Amainyi town were all for a particular lady – an accomplished banker, finest political amazon, grassroot mobilizer and charismatic woman leader,Lady Blessing Ifeyinwa Nwaoba popularly known with the sobriquet “Lady B.” It was her birthday anniversary celebration.
But the occasion turned out to be not the type of birthday most people were used to. It was more than a birthday contrary to the originally intended scenario. This was hitherto, not the plan. However, the love and admiration from the attendees for the celebrant overwhelmed and eclipsed the original intention, turning into a carnival of sorts, though the birthday celebration also coincided with the popular Mbomuzo festival of the people.
If anything, the genuine and overflowing outpouring of love for Lady B at what was supposed to be a mere birthday celebration highlighted her popularity, the love her people have for her and the high esteem she is held by the people. Such an open show of affection for an assuming amazon like “Lady B” reinforces the view that leadership, popularity, and love are better earned freely from the people than bought like a goat off a market stall.
From post-birthday analysis, some people are beginning to ask: Is Lady B the next female or rather the next “cock to crow” in her area? Who says women are weaker vessels? For how long can the people sacrifice quality at the expense of political and administrative mediocrity?
The answer to all these questions and more are for the good people of not only Ihitte Uboma but also Ehime Mbano and Obowo LGAs to provide. There is a popular saying that “if you like and cherish something, go for it.”
The aphorism that “if you train a girl-child, you train a nation” is no longer contestable in the light of the accomplishments of Lady B. Events in Nigeria, especially in the 21st century, have lucidly accorded credence to this axiomatic assertion.
With hindsight knowledge, it is quite easy to recall the exploits of some notable women in Nigeria, who have broken the barriers of male chauvinism and patriarchal entanglements foisted on women in most Nigerian families and communities, to excel in their various fields of human endeavours – medicine, economics, politics, banking, administration, commerce, sports etc. These women not only brought fame and honour to their immediate families but also etched everlastingly the names of their communities, States and Nigeria as a nation,in the memories of humanity, history, and posterity.
Women like Amina Mohammed – Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations,Chioma Ajunwa – Athlete and Olympic gold medalist, Stella Okoli – Founder, Emzor Pharmaceuticals Industries, Okonjo-Iweala – Director General, World Trade Organization ; not forgetting Dora Akinyuli,Onyeka Onwenu, Christy Essien Igbokwe,Grace Alele Williams – all of blessed memories, amongst numerous others, have,by their accomplishments, put Nigeria in the international map among the comity of nations of the world. The respective successes of these great Nigerian women borne out of their resilience, courage, focus, and astuteness have become positive reference points globally – it has equally reinforced the view that indeed women need a strong voice in the emerging socioeconomic and political milieu not just in Nigeria, but the world over. These women’s devotion to the public good has also put a huge question mark on the erroneous and mundane assertion that a woman’s rightful place is in the kitchen or the “other room.”
However, it must be borne in mind that no champion reigns forever. As some of these amazons take a bow as nature calls or advancement in age sets in,there is the need to raise new and strong breeds among women who will sustain the laudable legacies of these noble women, thereby ensuring that the fire they have lit, is not extinguished – and that women’s voice continues to resonate in the polity.
This is where a woman of Lady B’s pedigree becomes not only important but desirable, too. Humane, focused, broadminded, resourceful, charismatic, and resilient, Lady B is a very versatile woman and known advocate of fairness and justice for the women folk.
She is a banker,relationship management expert,politician,
administrator and an alumnus of the prestigious Manchester Business School and London Academy Business School – and also holds an MBA in Business Administration.
In Nigeria today, we pray that the efforts of our heroes and heroines in the past should not be in vain. The unique idiosyncrasies embedded in Lady B if properly harnessed and leveraged, can provide the key to seamlessly sustain the noble accomplishments of our nation’s heroines earlier mentioned herein.
Women ideally need a strong voice. But can there be a woman’s strong voice without the indispensable enablers like quality education, exposure, confidence, comportment, decency of character, and charismatism?
For any woman to hold a strong voice in a male dominated or patriarchal society like ours, such a woman needs all the above enumerated qualities and more – and this again is where Lady B stands tall and unmatched among her peers. In fact, she could aptly be described as a primus inter pares.
In politics, Lady B has made her modest marks. This fact is easily attested to by the people of Okigwe South Federal Constituency – comprising Ihitte Uboma, Ehime Mbano, and Obowo local government areas in Imo State. Her maiden foray into politics dates back to 2015 when she contested for Okigwe South Federal House of Representatives seat after meritoriously spending 21 years as an accomplished banker. She lost shockingly to the powers-that-be, then – a case that is today commonly referred by the constituents of her federal constituency as “day light political robbery.” In 2019, after winning her party primaries again for the same seat, she fell victim to inter-party legal squabbles between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Action Alliance (AA). Political pundits can still vividly recall that protracted legal battle in Imo State.
Being a determined woman loved by her people and who is desirous of ensuring that the voice of women is not suffocated, Lady B has remained undaunted. Like the Spartans of the ancient Greek mythology, she realizes that failure is not a crime, but low aim is – that women must be liberated from the shackles of naivety, docility, and self-pity
In appreciation of Lady B’s doggedness courtesy of her fight for women’s empowerment, a woman in Obowo local government area once described Lady B as – a silent achiever,a resilient personality, a defender of the poor, a war head of the weak, and a total progressive. This description can be likened to “a prophet being recognised by his own people.”
The Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, in appreciation and admiration of Lady B’s leadership potentials, appointed her his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Community Relations, Okigwe zone in 2020. This was a platform she used to support and enhance APC structures in all elections in Imo State until she was again elevated to the position of MD/CEO of Imo State Microfinance Bank in 2923 by the governor. Truly, “a golden fish has no hiding place.” She keeps setting the pace in whatever she is involved in.
The Imo Microfinance Bank under Lady B’s watch has metamorphosed into a financial institution with strong capital and liquidity base beyond the imagination of most people. Her managerial and administrative expertise, good working relationship with the staff and customers of the bank reinforces the axiom that “a good workman never quarrels with his tools” – just as the late literary sage, Chinua Achebe aptly posits in ARROW OF GOD that “an old woman is never old when it comes to the dance she knows very well.”
From all indications, it appears that Lady B is ideally evolving, and her growing popularity amongst her people is a positive indicator. Her story is equally a developing one.
Happy birthday to Lady Blessing Ifeyinwa Nwaoba :
■ an unassuming and humane woman administrator loved and adored by her people.
■ a silent achiever
■ resilient personality
■ defender of the poor and weak
■ a total progressive
Indeed, in Lady B, ideal leadership has truly met a maximized asset.
