Time For Truth: Why Owerri Zone Must Mend Bridges With Okigwe Zone And Rally Behind Dr. Ikedi Ohakim

The political landscape of Imo State is once again at a defining moment. The recent courtesy visit by stakeholders of Owerri Zone to Governor Hope Uzodimma has stirred conversations across the state, but beyond the handshakes and photo sessions lies a deeper truth that must be confronted with sincerity and courage. Courtesy calls, while symbolic, cannot substitute for honest reflection and political reconciliation.
The plain truth remains: Owerri Zone must stop the endless courtesy visits and begin the long-overdue reconciliation with Okigwe Zone. History cannot be rewritten. In 2011, Owerri Zone played a direct role in truncating the Charter of Equity when Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, a son of Okigwe Zone and then Governor, was denied a rightful second term. That decision destabilized the political balance of the state and plunged Imo into more than a decade of turbulence.
Today, Governor Uzodimma has spoken with rare boldness: “I cannot handpick my successor.” This statement is not just political rhetoric; it is a call for justice, fairness, and the restoration of equity in Imo State. If Owerri Zone is truly committed to equity, it must acknowledge its role in the 2011 anomaly and take the courageous step of mending bridges with Okigwe Zone.
Why Dr. Ikedi Ohakim?
At this defining juncture, one name stands tall—Dr. Ikedi Ohakim.
Ohakim is not a novice in governance. He is a leader tested by experience, trusted by the people, and respected across political divides. As Governor of Imo State from 2007 to 2011, he demonstrated vision, discipline, and a rare capacity to think beyond immediate politics. His administration initiated bold policies in infrastructure, environmental renewal, and public sector reforms. He laid down forward-looking economic blueprints that still stand as reference points for purposeful governance in Imo.
Unlike many who see political office as a means of self-enrichment, Ohakim remains one of the few leaders whose passion for Imo’s progress is unquestionable. He understands the pains of the people, the challenges of governance, and, more importantly, the roadmap to sustainable growth and stability.
Owerri and Okigwe: Partners in Justice
For the Charter of Equity to regain its dignity, Owerri Zone must reconcile with Okigwe Zone. This is not about apportioning blame but about taking responsibility. The future demands sincerity of purpose. Justice demands that Okigwe be allowed to complete its rightful course through one of its finest sons, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim.
Once this is achieved, Owerri Zone will naturally take its turn under a restored and respected Charter of Equity. Any attempt to sidestep this truth will only perpetuate imbalance, sow discord, and deny Imo people the peace and stability they deserve.
A Call to Conscience
Imo politics must rise above selfish ambitions and short-term gains. The state is bigger than any individual, and it requires leaders of vision, integrity, and tested competence to guide it into a brighter future. Supporting Dr. Ikedi Ohakim at this critical moment is not merely about Okigwe—it is about Imo as a whole. It is about healing political wounds, restoring balance, and ensuring that equity and fairness are no longer just slogans but guiding principles.
History has given Imo State another chance. Let Owerri Zone seize this moment, mend fences with Okigwe, and rally behind Dr. Ikedi Ohakim—tested, trusted, and prepared to serve with renewed vigor. Only then can equity, fairness, and progress truly reign in our dear state.
