Imo State Celebrates New Era of Traditional Leadership

By Ibe Innocent Ugonna

Today, March 22, 2025, marks a significant milestone in Imo State’s traditional leadership as 65 Eze-Elects from various autonomous communities gather at the Government House in Owerri to receive their Staff of Offices and Certificates of Recognition from Governor Hope Uzodinma.

The atmosphere is electric, with jubilant crowds thronging the streets and venues, including the Imo Douglas House Owerri and Rockview Hotels. The ceremony, held in the Executive Council Chamber, is a testament to the importance of traditional leadership in Imo State’s cultural heritage.

These newly appointed Ezes will assume critical roles as custodians of culture and tradition, representing their communities with pride and dignity. However, the celebration is also tempered by the knowledge that many of the royal seats were vacated due to the tragic loss of prominent Royal Fathers, allegedly victims of targeted attacks by unknown gunmen.

As the people of Imo State look to the future, they are also aware of the challenges that lie ahead, including the ongoing violence that continues to cast a shadow over the process of succession. Despite these challenges, today’s ceremony marks a significant step forward in Imo State’s journey towards stability and prosperity.
