Owerri Zone Courtesy Visit to Governor Uzodimma: Time to Correct 2011 and Restore the Charter of Equity

By Comr. Iwuchukwu
The recent courtesy visit of leaders from Owerri Zone to the Executive Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has once again brought to the fore the issue of political equity, justice, and fairness in our dear state.
Governor Uzodimma, in his usual candour, stated clearly that he cannot handpick his successor. This bold declaration reflects the truth that leadership in Imo should not be a matter of imposition, but rather the product of equity, consensus, and respect for the political arrangements that have held our state together.
As Owerri Zone reflects on its political journey, it is important to look back to the events of 2011. That year, a great mistake was made when the sitting governor from Okigwe Zone, Dr. Ikedi Ohakim, was denied the opportunity to complete his constitutionally guaranteed second term. That decision disrupted the natural flow of the Charter of Equity, creating an imbalance that Imo State still struggles with today.
Now, history is calling on Owerri Zone to correct that anomaly. True justice demands that power must first return to Okigwe Zone, for only then can the Charter of Equity stand on a firm foundation. And in Okigwe Zone, one name shines brightest — Dr. Ikedi Ohakim.
Why Ohakim?
1. One-Term Advantage: Ohakim has only one term left to complete his eight years, which makes him the most suitable bridge-builder. After his term, Owerri Zone can naturally take its rightful turn without obstruction.
2. Proven Leadership: Between 2007 and 2011, Ohakim’s administration was judged as one of the most performing in Imo’s history. From infrastructure, environmental reforms, and economic restructuring to peacebuilding, his policies left a lasting mark.
3. Political Balance: Allowing Ohakim to return will not only heal the wounds of 2011 but also set the stage for genuine unity across the three zones.
4. Equity and Justice: Supporting Ohakim now is the surest way for Owerri Zone to strengthen its own case for 2028. Equity is only meaningful when every zone plays its part with honesty and fairness.
The Way Forward
It is therefore imperative that all hands must be on deck to support the return of Dr. Ikedi Ohakim. His candidacy embodies stability, fairness, and competence. His return will restore balance to Imo’s political arrangement and prepare the way for Owerri Zone to take its rightful place when the time comes.
The Owerri Zone leaders must seize this moment, not with short-term sentiment, but with a long-term vision for Imo State’s peace and progress. The truth remains that only when Ohakim returns can the Charter of Equity become truly effective.
Now is the time to correct yesterday’s mistake, restore justice, and build a stronger, united Imo State.
Support Ikedi Ohakim — for equity, for progress, for Imo’s future.
